>With Cassie being able to quickly and efficiently taking care of the smoke that would have otherwise heavily impeded her, Jessica continued to adjust her aim for a few more precious seconds even as the armed lunatic set off a wide range explosive that had as much of a chance to injure him as it did his opponent's. Still, even with the explosion going off all around her, the captain of the Blue Turtle stood firms with nerves like steel as shards of ice rained down all around her position without ever managing to injure her.
>But with the time she'd bought suffering through the man's attack without so much as flinching and the support Cassie had given her blowing the smoke away, Jessica's shot was finally ready and she could finally bring herself to pull the trigger with a degree of precision she could be proud of.
Eat this you bastard.
>She muttered aloud as she fired off a bolt of dazzling blue light at her designated target.
>>41330993 >The crude creations the humans abused grew more terrifying as the pirate revealed more of his stash. Cassie, aided by his natural agility, twisted to avoid the icy knives. One buried itself into the stone at his feet, another pair flew past his head so close the wind whipped his hair.
>>41331202 >He had no time to reflect on how close he was to getting absolutely wrecked. His head ached and he knew he couldn't keep this up for much longer without tapping into something dangerous. They had to get rid of this guy quick, as much as he hated it.
>He brings up another gale out of stale air, whipping up old books and debris from ages underground, and sends it at the pirate.
>Deftly moving through the icicle shards, his glee came to a sudden halt when a lightning bolt ricocheted off his shoulder plate, leaving it feeling numb, while he found himself blasted backwards and nearly tripping on the stairway, several rocks and small chunks of ice beating him across the ribs.
Dohough! Ack, Fighting in a storm is bahahahahahahaaad news! Cap'n was right all along, and there's no mast to cling to!
>The wind, the debris, the lightning, it was like doing battle with a rough gale on the bow of an airship, always worried that engines might be struck and the whole crew sent hurtling back down to the earth. Ferret brought his hands to his ears for a moment, his balance failing him, before he remembered that they'd already suffered such a fate.
Ohoho, that's right! We already suffered the storm, and now the bright bird has something to say to you!
>Exactly what he meant by that was anyone's guess, but more worryingly was the fact that he holstered the grenade launcher to reach around to the large pack on his- wait... wait, that wasn't a pack at all.
BEHOLD, MY DIMINUTIVE COMPANION! REEEHEHEHEHEHHEEEE!
>The 'pack' was actually just a covering, and as Ferret removed the sheet, he revealed a full-blown airship's magitek cannon strapped to his back. Anyone who could perform feats of agility as he could while having that tied to them could already be regarded as freakish, let alone how he unslung the thing from its ties and held it over to them with pride.
Balls to the wall, now!
>With a crazed smirk, he pointed the huge thing not toward Jessica, but rather the elf who had continued to knock him around and frustrate him to this point. A single pull of the huge trigger was all it needed before a boom resounded through the old structure, partly knocking Ferret backwards as a massive ball of fire was sent hurtling forward!
>>41334086 >>41333065 >Whilst Cassie was doing a fantastic job holding his own and buffeting the enemy with blast after blast of magic to send the enemy reeling from the continuation of attacks he had to deal with. But everything changed when the fire cannon attacked. From a position of comfortable superiority, Jessica was brought back down to the reality that she was fighting for her life against a demented freak who would stop at absolutely nothing to see her and Cassie killed.
>As the madman swung the horrifically large cannon around and shot Cassie square in the chest, Jessica could think of nothing but the absurd amount of pain it must have inflicted on impact. How the man could lift the cannon was a mystery, how he could use it as a weapon and carry it around whilst being so agile as to climb the walls was incomprehensible. Still, like the man had so bluntly put it, the fight was almost over one way or another and it was very much time for them all to go "Balls to the Wall".
>With no time to aim lest the man turn that horrific weapon against her and bring the very walls of the ruin down on them in the process, Jessica snapshot a bolt of magical energy at her enemy without taking the time to aim the weapon properly.
Amonharoth “Cassie” Cassius-Illexus 5 May 2016 3:42:57 PM No.41334920
>>41334101 >>41334845 >The massive weapon the pirate revealed caught the elf off-guard. Any trained soldier or even mildly experienced ruffian would know to not let the enemy distract them, but a soft soul like Cassie was absorbed by the fear of machinery and the monstrosity behind it. By the time the thought of running came to him, it was too late.
>The mage dove away in vain. The fireball engulfed him and the book cases behind him, adding the possibility of destruction of ancient knowledge to the situation they found themselves in.
>From amidst the flames, Cassie stirred. The blast dazed him long enough for the fire to spread over his form, but the moment he regained his bearings, he pushed himself to his feet as if he felt no pain.
>To burn, fire needed three things--heat, fuel, and air--and he just so happened to be able to control one of them. A thin barrier of wind, constantly swirling and shifting along his body, kept the flames at bay for the time being.
That's enough!
>The elf's voice carried clearly across the ruins. Digging into the dwindling reserves of his mana and pulling courage from the wicked blow, he tears into the air and throws a slice of gale-force winds at the destructive pirate.
>Hopping up the stairs like a madman, Ferret danced with all the glee of a small child experiencing their first great success; the furious blast of fire seemed to never fail him, every time he had to resort to this it had caused wondrous results!
>Ducking and weaving the lightning bolts was a much more difficult task now, and was delaying him from firing another blast at the sniper in question - she was as persistent as ever, but perhaps his impatience had infected her slightly as the shots continued to blast wide, catching stone, brick and mortar rather than burning flesh from bone.
And for the GRAND FINALE! It's time to bring the house down!
>With a grand thunk, the sound of the cannon finally being ready to fire again resounded through the room, aimed precisely at the corner the annoying blue-haired wench was occupying-
>>41334920 >>41335031 Wait, wha- >whoooOOOOOOOSSSHHHHHH BOOOM!! CRASH!! CRACK! THUD! >The sound of glass shattering, the rush of wind, it all happened so fast that it was impossible to react to - no, even if he had it would've been impossible to stop. The sheer force of the air that connected with him caused an explosion of sound as it blasted through the room, debris falling from the ceiling, breaking from the wall, and though he only had a moment to appreciate it the sound of such a barrier breaking was incredibly pleasing to the explosives expert.
>To those around him, all they would see is a sudden cone of wind rushing out, and before even a second had passed his body was pushed upwards, through stone and rubble, smashing through glass and carrying on, upwards into the sky like a human cannonball that simply wouldn't stop. The last either Cassie or Jessica would see of their assailant was a small speck among the clouds, gently falling over what was possibly the other side of the island, only visible as an air-friction charred smoking corpse.
>>41334920 >>41335031 >>41335038 >Though the fight must have been nearing its end simply by virtue of the wounds the enemy had suffered, and the limited ammunition a horrific weapon of the likes of that cannon must have been able to hold. But whilst Jessica shot bolt after bolt of lightning at the peg-legged maniac he managed to avoid them all and eventually cannon turn the towards her position. Could she dodge an explosion that large even if she started moving now or was it already the end of the road for someone like her?
>That particular question never got answered as the elven mage rose from the rubble as avenging angel surrounded by a whirlwind of destruction. With a scream and a thrust of his hand she couldn't interpret, the maniac vanished from the battlefield in a cone of wind that left nothing behind. Made speechless by the display of awesome power, Jessica allowed herself to simply slump down and rest in relief that the battle had been won without so much as a casualty on their side.
>Speaking softly to the wind, Jessica smiled and held her weapon close.
Thanks Cassie, you really saved my bacon there.
>She said as a glance at her weapon's core showed it to be completely depleted.
>>41337373 >>41335031 >The elf dug his heels into the ancient stone and stood his ground as the gale ripped forth from his hands. He poured his heart and soul into that spell, and from the way it shattered the windows and blasted the insane pirate from the ruins, it showed.
>The wind fell back to its still state. Cassie's arms fell to his sides. At the very least, the tempest had put out the fire, leaving the elf standing in the wreckage. His long ears didn't miss the gratitude from the captain. It made him smile, but something confused him. The tired elf turned to raise a thin brow at her.
Why are you carrying bacon...?
>Humans were strange. Stranger still was the exhilaration he felt after such unabashed violence.
>>41337685 >With a terrible sigh, Jessica shook her head at the elf's lack of understanding and instead stood up from her slumped position, choosing to take advantage of their latest victory to move on and lost their oncoming pursuers. Hopping down from her perch onto the broken ground bellow, Jessica looked at the elf's battered form and saw that he had taken far more damage than she had in the fight. With a guilty conscience, the pirate vowed to see him repaid for the wounds he'd suffered on her behalf.
You aren't an ordinary mage are you.
You easily picked up what I spoke into the wind and that final attack you sent out...
I've never seen its like before.
>That being said, Jessica walked by the ruin's ground and headed for the large open doorway at the end of its hall. From the looks of it, the dark passage headed down further into the earth. Though there was no telling if it lead anywhere, as it stood that place looked like the most logical step to take in order to lose the other pirates.
>>41338342 >He would never know why she carried bacon, and that element of humanity would forever remain a mystery to him. At the very least, he wasn't the only one confused here. She was wondering how he was capable of all that. He coughed into his shoulder out of either embarrassment or damage to his lungs from the hot air, and hurried after the pirate.
I-I don't really know what humans consider ordinary, s-so... not really? I'm just...
>He adjusted the strap of his rucksack. The hide kept the contents safe from the fire.
... they--The Order, they said that I had potential, so I spent a lot of time under Vicar Adronia's tutelage. H-he taught me everything I know about magic--almost everything, I mean. Magic's my... it was my life. That and studying and copying our records. So-so I had plenty of time to learn things like, um, that.
>Looking forward through the dark burried corridors, Jessica struggled to see for a moment before sighing and leaning against the nearest wall, using her hand to feel her way forward, Jessica moved into the dark ruins with a cautious step.
But somehow that came to an end and you ended up hitching a ride as a stowaway on a pirate ship.
>>41338671 Y-yeah, uh, was, since now my life is more about surviving than studying...
>The dimming light didn't bother Cassie, but he slowed down to keep pace behind the pirate. She was the leader, after all.
I... you know the big book I'm carrying? It's kind of, um... there's this section of the library at the monastery of forbidden books we kept... they've been kept there for-for a long time, ever since my ancestors set out to war. One of the books is, or, that WAS there, is a spellbook they said was written by a Chosen, with magic that could make the blind see and end wars, o-or so they said... pro-problem is, it's in a dead language, and we--they were fine with it being untranslated.
>He coughs a little and clears his throat. Definitely smoke inhalation. He'd fix that once he didn't feel like falling over.
I didn't--I didn't want to see that possible knowledge go to waste, so I grabbed the book a-and escaped on the wind. My-my glider broke before I could get very far, so I hiked down to the port a-and sneaked on the first ship out... which happened to be yours, or theirs, or something, so now I'm kinda just... here...
>>41339183 >Well that certainly was a tale of completely unromantic proportions she couldn't relate to in any way or form. Maybe it was an elf thing to throw away one's life over a book they couldn't read but had the potential to do great things but it certainly didn't feel like a logical thing to do. Still, for all intents and purposes Cassie had saved her life and looked to be a genuinely good person behind his incessant habit to trip all over himself at the slightest provocation.
>With a sigh, Jessica continued to walk slowly in the dark underground halls of the ruin, her artistic instincts already trying to spin Cassie's tale into something with proper poetic flourish yet finding, for the moment at least, that it was something a bit beyond her.
Well, at least that book will probably sell for a lot.
>>41341371 >Cassie was so dumbstruck by her statement that he actually stopped.
Wh-why would I--?!
>Sell it? Did she not hear everything he said? Were humans really so concerned with gold, they didn't care about anything else?! Cassie kept himself from freaking out at the culture shock by taking a deep breath in, out, and hustling to catch up with the woman.
N... no thanks. I don't intend on selling it. The knowledge is worth more than any material possession.
