>For as long as I can remember, I've been able to see fairies. They're not small, like people think they are, they're just... socially challenged. All they really want to do is play and for people that work, they tend to get in the way a little. I don't mind so much. They tend to make life a little more exciting, even if they don't stay for long. Fairies don't like it, here.
>Every day is the same; wake up, fall out of the hammock, get dressed and get to work. Two hours later we get breakfast, then it's back to the rocks for another four hours before lunch. I always get mine from Martin at the main gate, it's a bit of a walk but he sells his sandwiches for less than the other vendors. We get to rest for two hours in the middle of the day during Solaire, which means we all get to talk and play games. They say it's to stop people from getting heatstroke, but really it's just a courtesy - the prisoners don't get to rest no matter what time it is, so we're made to watch them to count ourselves lucky.
>Then we work right up until sunset, and once the sun's down everybody hitches up to the carts and we get out of the caverns with the day's haul - shining blue crystal, so bright it's almost like the sky. Some days are good and my group gets paid a lot, while other days we're not so lucky. Sometimes we get shoved around by the older miners and they take some of our haul, but it's not like we can do much to stop it; they're bigger than we are and they get to use those fancy Jackdaggers because they're over 16, there's no way we can stand up to them.
>Usually everyone heads back to the bunk for dinner and a rest, but I like to do a little bit of digging out of hours, just to see what I can find. I'll get in trouble if I get caught, but I'm never really out there to steal what's in the caves - it's where they live. They like the shining lights.
>No-one believes me so I've stopped talking about it, but it's true. They don't like this place, they say it has a bad 'aura' or something, but every time I see them they're watching the lights in the crystals with 'oooh's and 'aaah's, and some of them start to cry. I always get a little teary when they do, but I never really know why. One day they're making mischief in the courtyard and everyone thinks it's mice knocking everything over, but the next they just look so sad.
>Maybe I'll be able to talk to them about it one day, when they speak in a way I can actually understand. For now, I'd better get to sleep before the boss comes around for light's out. I might not be able to talk to other people about all this, but at least I can talk to this journal.
