>Kantarus, the great underwater Capital Alaestus. The home of great technological advancements and wonder. For many years, the people of this city have lived and thrived under a massive lake away from the rule of Termina.
>A marvel of engineering, Kantarus is a complex compact system of powerplants, waste management, air ventilation, bio domes, workshops, and living areas. Not an inch of space that could hold some important function could be wasted when one lives under water and expanding the city was a huge challenge...
>And even without expansion, there was still many other problems to deal with and things to maintain... >continued.
>>41289588 Fucking idiots! Keep tell em that no matter how much I patch up those damn pipes they're just gonna find another place to leak! Or burst! We have to replace them before some poor granny turns on her taps and her kitchen floods!
>For Caitlin Whiteberyl, that was part of her job an an engineer. Keep things running around here so the higher ups can stroke themselves about how advanced this city is while pipes needs to be replaced and the main cargo lift needs it's elevation gears serviced again. Can't send all the supplies they needs down here with subs, that's inefficient and she won't allow this place to become inefficient! Even if she'd rather be working on her diving suit or making something that wasn't run by freaken crystal down here.
Damn lazy arse. Don't know who he had to suck off to be the lead engineer around here...
>Now she didn't have a problem with crystals, they were extremely beneficial to have and made life down her possible. But her father always to never fully trust something you don't fully understand, and nobody fully understood crystals. We knew what they could do and how, but we don't know the why's, where's and what. Why can they hold magic in the first place? Where does crystal actually come from? What exactly is crystal really? Without knowing everything there was no way to be ready fully for what could happen down the road.
Need a drink after that bullshite.
>But that was neither hear nor there, Cait as now riding the monorail towards the expansive residential areas of Kantarus away from the noisy systems and workshops that keep the city. Her destination was a bar where she could have a pint of ale and not have it taste like someone pissed in it and get a decent meal to go along with it. Joey's Bar and Grill, common hang out for engineers because of it's location right in the station that dropped them off close to home. Cait watches as endless snaking pipes, winding maintenances tunnels, and busy machinery of the Systems District (shortened to just "Systems" by most) gave way to grassy tree filled parks, compact apparent buildings, and busy people of Residents below her and her minds starts to wander.
....Maybe if I reduce the weight by using a lighter alloy instead of just straight Sea Steel for the frame... get better mileage... but might compromise the strength... maybe a composite material will help? Gotta try one of those fancy ceramics when they finally go down in price...
>She'd been in a bit of a rut trying to make improvements in a newer more efficient model of Diving Suit. The one's right now worked pretty well still... but they were bulky, heavy, and hard to move around in. Plus the current model didn't have many attachments to go with it. And her experience doing work underwater made that clear when she had to fight off one too many Viper Fish with nothing but a high-torque Power drill and a rivet gun. Then again she was surprised at how disturbingly effective it was shooting at things both in and out of the water.
...
Probably could tool it better to have better range and accuracy though.
>Normal weapons weren't exactly something you had the luxury of bringing around on your tool belt underwater. So tools had to pull double duty. Her thinking almost made her miss her stop and it was five seconds after the monorail came to a stop and the doors slid open before she realized it.
Oh!
>Don't want to be run from the next stop over, that would be a pain. Quickly getting off and making her way past the folk getting on to go else where or to their shift at Systems, Cait makes her way out of the loading platform, down the stairs, and making a right towards Joey's. Finally, salvation was close at hand...
>>41289588 >>41289693 >Life in the Remusian college was by no means an easy one for those who have opted to dedicate themselves to the endless labor of theoretical research. Particularly when one's field of study encompassed such fields as theological research and its magical applications given that the field itself was one of contested worth whose very basis was a highly debated theory. As a result, what should have been a life of quiet seclusion and study for Regina was instead spent writing constant reports and interpretations of new findings to her fellow scholars seen through the lens of her own department's orientation. Though the truly draining part was the constant need for lengthy prefacing of every single paper she made with a defense of the department's theory to some new attack someone or other made over the last week.
>But when things came to a close and the lights turned off in the main library, oftentimes the priestess liked to stretch her legs and take a long walk down to some pub or other she happened across. This time, the woman's wandering took her off the monorail and off in front of a conveniently placed pub right inside of the station she exited.
>But even as she went to head inside the alluring building, Regina spotted a woman with a shock of blonde hair heading right for her.
>>41292794 Probably want to get the newest actuator models AlaesTech put out when I get paid next... left leg's getting sticky again...
>Closing in the dive bar, the engineer was absorbed in her thoughts until she was called out be someone.
Huh?
>She spotted the person quickly and she waves to the woman.
Regine! Hey! I see you're done work for that day too!
>The two had a chance meeting when something needed fixing at the college and Cait drew the short straw to go and repair it. There she meet the scholar and the two hit it off pretty well. Or at least she hopes so, being raised by dwarf and having a colourful vocabulary herself didn't exactly make it easy to make friends at times.
Nothing flooding over there?
>Given the state of the piping recently from what she'd seen, that an honest question instead of a joke.

>>41294783 >Still wearing her full priestess garb with a large flowing overcoat and traditionally overly large hat since she hadn't yet gotten a chance to head home and change, The lady researcher frowned at the question but only because it forced her to think of the very place she'd come here to forget about. With a dismissive wave of her, Regina sighed and shrugged off the entire idea of it.
If there's anything flooding then I am more than certain that it has for more to do with Sir Barestine's obstinate research into water transmogrification than any failure in the pipe system.
>With a tilt of her head and a sparkle in her eye, Regina looked at the young mechanic and smiled to herself.
But if you don't mind, I came here to get away from those old coots and think about anything but the many, many troubles of the college.
Why don't we head inside and get something to drink?
I'll even buy you something if you don't mind lending me your company.
>>41297457 Yeah, good point, forget I brought it up.
>She probably didn't want to talk about work just as much as Cait would. Probably had her own idiots to deal with while on the job. >The offer to go inside with her and have a drink gave her chance to swing away from that though.
Sounds good to me, not gonna say no if you're buyen.
>She could be cheap when she wanted to be, but you needed to be when you supported a hobby like hers.
>Pushing past the engineer, the priestess opened the door to the bar and stepped into the loud bustling establishment. As far as she could see most tables and stools were taken though there was still a small table available at the corner of the room. Pushing past a mob of jostling people holding drinks, Regina was able to sit herself down without too much trouble.
>Letting out a loud sigh Regina leaned back and stared at the ceiling for a moment, letting herself go almost as soon as she managed to get off her feet.
>>41304928 >Following after her Cait manages to push her way past the people, many of them her co-workers, and takes a seat opposite to the other girl.
It has hasn't it? But now we get to have a drink and enjoy ourselves!
>Sure she was still annoyed by the fact her boss could be a lazy idiot, but that wasn't gonna stop her from having a good time here. >Then they'll be energized and get back to it once again. Or at least that's how she looked at it, better to be optimistic about it... right?
>>41305049 >Taking off the large hat and overcoat of her office, Regina sighed and settled herself down correctly when a waitress came to take their order. Ordering two overly large mugs of strong ale, the collegiate priestess leaned further back and sighed deeply. If it were anyone else, then Regina would look only mildly tired but given just how rigid she could be, the show of even a mild amount of exhaustion was tantamount to a complete loss of all rigidity in posture to anyone else. Whatever it was Regina had been doing at the college must have been seriously exhausting to affect her like this.
If I have to veto one more ludicrous crucible application then I swear that I will scream.
>Said the girl with the coal black hair though looking at her passive expression there was little chance that she could ever do something like that.
>>41305633 >Oh wow, were things really that bad over there for her? Never mind a drink, she needed a vacation topside ASAP.
Get those too often huh? I were in your shoes, I'd probably be doin' more then screaming...
>To her credit, Regina handled it better then Cait ever would have. She'd have gone and said some things to people that not ever her father would approve of his little girl saying.
Guess taking a break for a bit isn't an option am I right?
>She knew the work was important and often challenged be the other eggheads over there... But still it had to afford some time to recharge right?
>>41309082 >Sighing wistfully at the idea of taking a prolonged break from her duties to the college, Regina sadly shook her head to Caitlin's suggestion, sensible though it were. With pressures from her superiors to participate in the crucible for her own gains and the obligation to fill in one of the judge's seats this year, there was no way her vacation days would be approved for at least a week after the event was done and over with.
Truth be told it wouldn't be so bad if my fellow scholars would show any sort of interest in my new areas of research rather than they obstinately insist I demonstrate my failed experiments.
>Sitting silently for a moment longer, Regina very subtly livened up when the waitress she had ordered from reappeared with the large mugs of ale she had ordered mere moments prior. If anything at all could be said for the establishment it was that they certainly knew how to be expedient with their service. Taking the full foaming tankard up to her mouth Regina drank deeply, taking long swallows of bitter drink one after the other until she finally sat back with a muted sigh of satisfaction.
So, do you plan to enter the crucible this year?
>She mentioned after a time, her mood definitely taking a turn for the curious after the dour.
>>41311262 >Taking her own mug of ale and indulging in a big swig of the stuff inside, the blonde mulls over the other woman's situation. It was a shitty thing to be stuck in that's for sure. Needing a break form it all yet not being able to do so because she was too busy trying to defend her research from other scholars. >Real shitty situation to be in. >But as that was floating around in her mind, Regina asks if Cait was going to enter the Crucible this year.
Yeah I am. Finally got my prototype diving suit in working order.
>Now it was time for the gushing about her own work to begin. Her eyes light up and an expression of pure joy starts to grow on her face as she talks.
Did what I could to improve it from the base models, made it less cumbersome, reduced it's overall size and weight, been working on producing a stronger yet lighter frame for it,looking into new tool attachments, even alternate power sources! Oooooh if I get the funding, I'm going to get some of those fancy new fancy ceramics to try out! And propulsion systems! It takes waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long to walk underwater all the time!
>>41319248 >Nodding to the enthusiastic mechanic with a moderate reaction to her exited speech, Regina sat back and drank from her mug once more, almost emptying it in one respectable gulp.
I see, underwater technological innovations are a somewhat neglected field and that explains the lack of recent development towards those suits.
I'm glad to see people like you see where the work is needed rather than where they want it to be.
>Finishing off her drink in one last mouthful of ale, the respectable priestess sighed and sat back in her chair amidst the hub-ub of the tavern.
>>41322338 >The comment about neglecting fields causes the blonde to huff.
Yeah, it's nice to have ambitions but people gotta remember that keeping what we have already in working order us just as important. Ugh, we got one idiot over at Facilities that doesn't know their arse-end from a rivet gun. Says he's gonna by my boss one day, told him he better start working at it if he wants to get there before I retire and die of old age.
>She gulps down the rest of her ale and sighs.
And thanks for the vote of confidence, look forward to yours as well.
>Whatever it may be exactly. Give her a machine and generally know what to do with it but she could never wrap her head around what the eggheads over there got into.
>>41326389 >With a troubled expression Regina sat back in her chair at the mention of her presentation.
Truth is I haven't decided what my presentation should be on. My higher ups are pressuring me to present on an old research project I abandoned rather than my current line of research. It was easy to tell them off the first time they approached me on it but now that they've officially threatened to cut my funding if I don't present on what they want then its a lot more serious.
>Sighing deeply the priestess shook her head in exasperation.
The mean to keep myself from starving or Pride, I've been debating which I value more and haven't yet come up with a solution.
