[Three Weeks after the Rayfield expedition]
>So it turns out that sneaking into a mine and rescuing a bunch of prisoners isn't as easy as conceptualising the plan. As obvious as it should have been to Logan, and had already been to the other two, but the reality of the situation was beyond even their expectations.
>Let's step back a little bit on the timeline...
----------------------------------
>It had been relatively easy to head back to Kingsmeet and secure funds for the trip to Empyrean, between Logan's lack of crazy expenditure and Elias's extreme amount of coin from his few long-term missions they had enough for a decent expedition into the capital. Logan had initially wanted to head out as soon as possible, but Elias talked him down with the usual statement of very relevant points; they wouldn't be able to do much without money and there was also the possibility that Tai had returned to the guild, for lack of a better option. Unfortunately, he wasn't there either, forcing the group to head off on their own lest too much time pass.
>Elias had reported their current findings to the old man whilst Logan and Leo prepared supplies and began to think up strategies - though he didn't have recent knowledge, Logan was still more familiar with Empyrean than the other two and so they had to use that information as a base.
>The first plan they came up with came in three steps:
>1) Arrive and investigate the mine in question, find out as much as they can about how they might be able to get in or out whilst trying to limit their exposure as much as possible - it's be ruined if they made themselves obvious, after all.
>2) Once they figured out a few methods of entering and exiting, they'd gather the supplies needed for several of the options, just in case things didn't go as easily as they'd hoped.
>3) Perform the plan and get out of Empyrean faster than they could say 'we fucked up'.
>With all of that confirmed to be the battle tactic, they once again set off by train to Empyrean, arriving in the afternoon of a particularly hot day. Still, thanks to the coastal nature of the city, it was far cooler there than it was in Kingsmeet - the breeze was stronger and less warm. All in all, it gave them the feeling of a decent start. All they had to do was start by investigating the mine.
>Unfortunately...
And I'm telling you, access is restricted!
What? Look, pal, we're on a mercenary contract here, all we need to do is take a look around-
Don't you 'look, pal' me, pal. Read the bloody sign. 'Everforge mine is to be closed to visitors pending the results of an ongoing investigation'. If you want in, come back once that's done.
Oh, right, sure, and how long exactly is this 'investigation' going to take?
Sass me again, lad, and I'll have you cuffed for obstruction of the law. I'm just telling you how it is. No merc or trader or whoever else is getting into this mine without a written permit from the foreman or the owner, and believe me, the foreman ain't gonna be too pleased to have to deal with a few mercs compared to sorting this mess out.
Right, right, okay, I get it. No access without a permit. That's alright, we'll just wait. Can't be that big of a problem, anyway.
----------------------Present Day--------------------
>And then three weeks passed.
Three. Whole. Fucking. Weeks.
>Logan kicked a small glass bottle down the street as he was walking, the impact hurting his foot a little but easing the frustrations he was feeling.
How much have we spent on staying the nights and food, so far? First it was 'it'll be a few days', then it was 'complications have come up so it'll be another week', I just give up! It would've been nice to be able to take a look around legally, but come on Elias, I've been saying for a fucking fortnight that we should just hop over the gate or something!
>Utterly tired of everything, including walking aimlessly around the capital (however vast and beautiful it could be), Logan stopped by a nearby bench and unclipped his weapon harness, dropping the large sword down beside it before sitting down and giving his legs, arms and back a stretch.
Mmnngh... oooh, that's so much better. Screw this heat, seriously. I'd rather experience a frosty blizzard than roast in this hell.
