>He'd never seen Mort's mother...He'd seen Naythen before, in the days when both Valus brothers were working together, but he'd never seen any mother. Or any woman in the lab, for that matter. She had to be somewhere, right? Neither of them had ever really given a straight answer...
>Either way, that wasn't relevant right now, as Ragnar grins brightly at his friend.
Of course I know how to fight people! Youngest brother in a family's gotta know how to defend 'emselves.
>His eyes light up as he leans in, his face practically shining with anticipation
Do you want to learn how to fight? I always knew you'd come around from that weird magic crap eventually! You've gotta let me actually hit you though, or I can't teach anything.
Mortdecai!pR.BaFF/uk 4 Dec 2015 7:03:31 PM No.41170756>>41170772
>>41169162 >Well, that was a promising start. The little brainwave he'd just gone through was a bit vague at the moment, but there was definitely something to it. His Dad tended to handle himself at a distance, though he didn't know much about it because he never really seemed to enjoy that sort of thing at all. Uncle Nate, though, he seemed to relish in testing things full-on, perhaps a little too zealously. Still, if he had one thing from his Dad already, maybe it wouldn't be so bad to take a little of the other source he knew of.
>After all, no offense to the guy, but from what he'd seen of Ragnar his style just wasn't... him.
I guess you could say that, but I've got a question - what if you fought a guy who could throw a punch and hit you, but was too far away to hit back..?
Ragnar Whitsun!Ren/VL7f/Q 4 Dec 2015 7:19:18 PM No.41170772>>41170781
>>41170756
>Could throw a punch and hit HIM, but he couldn't hit him back? That was a hard situation to envisage...Ragnar sat there for a moment, thinking on it.
...So, the guy has stretchy arms or something? I dunno, usually I just charge at them until I'm into range, then I start clobbering 'em...If they're REALLY far away, I might throw a really big rock at 'em.
>He shrugs his shoulders, his face non-committal.
Maybe if YOU were punching people, you could use your direction thing to move the air really fast at them, I don't really know how it works...But non magic folk ain't got much option besides runnin' at them.
Mortdecai!pR.BaFF/uk 4 Dec 2015 7:26:06 PM No.41170781>>41170791
>>41170772 >So he'd charge until he got close and then just cancel the range advantage to begin with, or send some sort of projectile over. Interesting... though his thoughts on the ability he had were a little off, as much as he wished it were that easy.
Trouble with the wind thing is that the wind has to be moving pretty fast first. I mean, sure I could tell the wind to go forward, but if the air's still it's not really gonna do much. There kinda needs to be some sort of force already there for it to work.
>Still... there might be an answer somewhere in there. There has to be a force for it to work, and if he tried to change the direction of a direct punch he'd probably just end up breaking his arm or some other ridiculous outcome.
What if the punches were invisible as well as from a distance...? I guess you'd call that pretty unfair, huh?
Ragnar Whitsun!Ren/VL7f/Q 4 Dec 2015 7:42:35 PM No.41170791>>41170805
>>41170781
Hell yeah I'd call that unfair!
>Ragnar's face turns into one of annoyance, his arms folded and his mouth curled into a frown.
How'm I supposed to have a fair and awesome fight if I can't see the punches being thrown at me? I'd have to...I dunno, smell them coming. Like in those books about the monks.
>He thought harder, he could move direction, but only if there was movement first?
What about speeding up a punch? It has to be moving initially, right? You could hit faster than the other guy suspects, and then you hit them loads of times really fast, and then they explode!
>Ragnar mimes the explosion with his hands, accompanied by sound effects and a wide grin.
Mortdecai!pR.BaFF/uk 4 Dec 2015 8:03:42 PM No.41170805>>41170808
>>41170791 >Smell them coming? Could he do that? Could monks smell things like they could see them? That sounded like a really weird thing to happen, but it could be totally possible. Supposedly they could fly if they concentrated hard enough, not that he'd met any.
Huh? Speed up? No, no, you don't get it, that's a vector, not a direction. Don't you know basic physics?
>There wasn't even a point to trying. At least he was useful for things like, well... everything except the understanding of directional control in a three-dimensional physical space. Mort had to admit, when it came to talking to people without seeming like some kind of murderous psychopath, Ragnar had it pretty good.
So if I could throw a psychic punch, you'd call me a cheater?
Ragnar Whitsun!Ren/VL7f/Q 4 Dec 2015 8:33:47 PM No.41170824>>41170833
>>41170810
Well...No. Not you. You're my friend. I'd call anybody else a cheater though.
>The concentration dips, his arms hanging loosely at his side as he attempted to understand exactly what Mort wanted out of this.
...I guess if you were making the punching motion, but the impact happened at a distance, it wouldn't be cheating. Like, if you had invisible stretchy fists I wouldn't know what you were doing. This is just...punching the air and having the impact happen at the body? Maybe you could pretend to punch the air and just throw something at them.
Mortdecai!pR.BaFF/uk 4 Dec 2015 8:54:25 PM No.41170833>>41170838
>>41170824 >Well, that was an oddly touching sentiment. Not that he fully understood the reasoning behind it, but it seemed like the general idea was that because they'd known each other for a fair while, he could get away with stuff other people couldn't. That sounded pretty great.
So it'd be unfair, but I can do it anyway? Hahaha... wow. That's like, perfect for beating the snot out of that explosive brat. I mean, what's 'honourable' about explosions anyway?
Now the only question is how to figure this out... hrmm...
>Sitting in thought for a moment, Mort had to start from the basics. What was he aiming to achieve? From a scientific perspective, he wanted to cause the impact of instantaneous kinetic force at a long range, but how much would he need? What was an effective amount?
You know, come to think of it, I have no idea...
>He'd never been punched before, after all.
Alright. 'Cause you're helping me, I'll let you do it.
>Managing to stand on his own two feet, Mort walked over to the middle of the room they were in.
I've probably only got a little bit of time before Dad passes me some sort of new dumb assignment or asks for another stupid medical exam, so I'm gonna need to collect data when I can get it.
>Spreading his arms wide, he tossed a grin over at Ragnar.

>A free hit? Just like that?
You're gonna let me hit you? I mean...You've only just gotten healed.
>...No. That wasn't the attitude to take. This was in the name of self improvement! Mort never wanted to try anything that wasn't being magical, he couldn't falter now!
All right man, but, I hit pretty hard.
>He grins cockily at his friend.
So, don't cry if it really hurts.
>And with that, he stomps the floor, grounding himself properly. Deep breath in, deep breath out. Gotta prepare yourself before you start laying into a guy. His stance shifts slightly, his eyes open. Ragnar reels back his fist and sends it flying straight into Mort's awaiting face, as hard as he possibly can.
Mortdecai!pR.BaFF/uk 4 Dec 2015 9:22:31 PM No.41170850>>41170855
>>41170838 >Wondering how this was going to turn out, Mort attempted to focus on the fist to see if he could properly analyse the angles and everything involved.
It's fine, it's all in the name of science!
>And so the fist began to fly forward. Ragnar seemed to be doing something with that foot of his to plant it into the ground like that. The fist started to reel back, before very quickly whipping forward. A longer motion for more force at the end, then? Wait, that fist was getting awfully big...
>Something set into Mort that he hadn't really experienced all that much before. Perhaps if he hadn't been caught by those explosions like he had it might not have even occurred to him, but now he knew, almost instinctually, that this was, and had always been, a very bad idea.
Ragnar Whitsun!Ren/VL7f/Q 4 Dec 2015 9:37:34 PM No.41170855>>41171461

>So elated was he to be helping in his friend's training. To teach him a little bit about glorious unarmed combat. It didn't even cross his mind that Mort would be scared. He would be bold! Daring! Ever stalwart in his pursuit of improvement! He was most certainly NOT going to block the attack.
>Of course, that assumed a LOT of someone that had never been punched before, hurt before, or even SCARED before. Hindsight is 20/20, they say. Ragnar didn't even manage to get anywhere in the vicinity of Mort's face before he was violently repulsed into the nearest wall.
>A look of pure shock is emblazoned on Ragnar's face as he lay suspended in the crater made by his impact, before he dropped to the floor in a loose heap. He did, however, manage to groan out a single thing.
Mortdecai!pR.BaFF/uk 5 Dec 2015 1:06:08 PM No.41171461>>41171474
>>41170855 >Once the danger had passed, it took a couple of moments for Mort to come to his senses. The impact on the far wall was plain to see, and after blinking a few times to fully process what had just happened, a hand slowly rose toward his face, accompanied by a long sigh.
Well... yeah, I did, but that was before you taught me that punches to the face are horrifying. Besides, I guess I technically never said I wouldn't hit back.
>Walking over to his only friend (hopefully), the mage extended an arm out to help him to his feet, assuming the guy could stand.
Sorry, something came over me. I don't even know what it was, have I felt that way before? You sure taught me something new, at least.
>It was a weird sensation going through his mind, the idea of fear. Though it was only a small sample, there was something in his memories that was calling out to him, some kind of link to what he had experienced before. Alas, it wouldn't come to him no matter how hard he tried, but one thing certainly did stick out from the event that had just transpired.
>If his magic were to ever fail him and he were to be vulnerable like that, he wouldn't have a clue what to do. Thinking of that, and of how Ragnar fought, was that fear the same as what he faced when fighting? Without the magic he had, how would he stand a chance?
I've come up with something else I'd like to learn - how would you go about avoiding something like that? You've got no repulsive field to prevent them from hitting you.

>Ragnar gratefully takes the hand, pulling himself up into a standing position, sharply exhaling through his teeth each time his body elected to remind him that he should be recovering right now. He glowers over at Mort, before something he says catches his attention.
>"Something came over me. I don't know what it was..."
...Were you scared, Mort? I mean, I'm a pretty scary guy normally, just look at these guns.
>He flexes once more, but immediately yelps in pain as he discovers straining a bruised body for show is a bad idea.
...But you've never really been punched before. So, maybe that made it worse.
>But, he'd been asked another question, so he stretches the only remaining non-injured muscle he had, his brain. Unfortunately, it was not subject to the same intensive work out as the rest of him, but the question was a relatively simple one.
Oh, that? That's easy. I just dodge. If an attack's coming towards me, I move out of the way. The attack misses, and then I make a counterattack!
>He slams his fist into his palm.
You can dodge any attack, provided you know where it's coming from. Blocking magic's hard with your bare hands, but if it misses, it's worthless!
